Chapter 11

“Alright, Sly,” said Lore as she guided the dog toward Holt’s Diner. “In the past five minutes, I’ve already run into two guys I absolutely didn’t want to run into. Surely now I can go inside and eat in peace.”

At that moment, she saw the police cruiser on the road. Just like earlier, it rolled by at a slow speed. This time, though, the window was down, and she could see Garth Rhodes inside, staring at her. He gave her a nod and a wave and kept going.

“Please don’t park somewhere,” Lore prayed aloud.

The cruiser turned onto a side street and disappeared. Lore let out a groan of relief and went inside. A grumpy-looking woman was waiting at the hostess stand.

“Just one?” she asked, in the most bored voice Lore had ever heard.

“Just two,” Lore corrected her. “Is it alright if I bring my dog in here?”

The hostess’s eyes lazily rolled down until they were looking at Sly. She made a face, curling her upper lip.

“I don’t care,” she said. “Booth or table?”

Lore asked for a booth and followed the hostess along.

I guess when you’re the only name in town as far as greasy breakfast food goes, you can get away with bad service, thought Lore.

The waitress was a different story. She was happy and bubbly, but not to a fake degree. Her name was Becky, and with her bleached hair and long, fake nails, she fit the name to a T.

“What can I get started for ya?” Becky asked.

“Just water for now,” Lore said. “With lemon. Thanks.”

Becky headed off, leaving Lore alone to look over the menu. It was laminated and ancient, but someone had wiped it off in the not-too-distant past, so it wasn’t too greasy or sticky. She decided what she wanted straight away after seeing the pictures. While she waited for the return of Becky, she looked around the diner.

There were a dozen booths in the place and as many tables. Half were occupied, mostly by lone diners—working people who had stopped in for their lunch break. Lore didn’t recognize any of them.

Becky scooted into view with a glass of water. She also had a bowl of water, which she set on the floor.

“For your cute little pooch,” she explained, scratching the top of Sly’s head with her neon pink nails.

“Thank you, Becky,” Lore said. “I think I know what I want now. A mushroom Swiss burger. And I’d like to upgrade to onion rings.”

Her stomach growled, as though congratulating her on her good sense.

“Sure thing,” said Becky, scrawling something on her little pad. “And for the pup?”

“Oh, I’ve got food for him in my backpack. Thanks. Hey, Becky… Can I ask you something?”

Becky looked up from her writing. “Is it about our daily special?”

“It’s about the policeman who was just in here,” Lore said.

Becky fanned her face. “Oh, Sergeant Shaw! He’s dreamy. And he’s a good tipper. I keep hoping he’ll write his number down, but he never does. Is that weird to say?”

“I’ll allow it,” Lore replied.
